After checkout the following morning, we tramped the Hooker Valley trail at Mt. Cook. This was about 4 1/2 km one way. The last view of Hooker Lake and Hooker Glacier was not as spectacular as other sites seen but it was a nice start to the day. To offset this were the sounds of the mountains and glaciers as they either calved off ice or rocks with a resulting sound that is similar to an airplane taking off. Or so we thought the night before.
Next up is our drive to Wanaka, not a long one but still, one that you needed to be awake for. The scenery is a repeat of yesterday.
We arrive at our motor hotel that we have booked for two nights. We (Bill is) are looking forward to a day off driving and it looks like a nice town to spend some time. We are surprised by the views of the lake below us. We are afforded with views of the town as well as the entire east end of the lake.
Sunset views are amazing the hard part was choosing which photo to show.
This is our last stay at a motor lodge. We weren’t sure what to expect but staying at motor lodges was a great choice. We were able to self-cater but also met a lot of interesting people. In the evening, everyone sits outside their rooms with a beverage in hand and shares their day and other travel experiences.
