Perth – Freemantle

October 20 – A day in Freemantle / Perth via train.

Actually, to be fair both Perth and Freemantle present themselves as very different communities. Calling them communities sets them apart from calling them cities where they differ geographically, different definitions. And they are different. While both hold their old-world charms one moved on to the more modern world and the other holds desperately onto to old-world both maintaining the ambiance that makes them unique.

Thoughts about Perth. It a city like many others growing and in transition. While many modern buildings dot the cityscape the old ones remain a reminder of the beginnings of life in the city. The character of the old in contrast with the new makes for a dramatic skyline.

Freemantle, thoughts. This is about the old, which is a reminder of their beginnings. Personally, I think the old provides more definition to the origins of Australian life. That makes me think about the hows and whys of the early explorer’s existence. Looking at the architecture in Freemantle gives an explanation to the beginnings of early settlers and were they came from. Obvious signs of European influence are seen in many buildings including one that reminded me of many buildings in the New Orleans french quarter.
